Artist’s Bio
Chris Erickson is an artist recognized for his captivating use of color through contemporary works that blur the line between sculpture and painting. His art encourages the examination of color as expression and its relationship to human behavior. Born in Denver, Chris became inspired through city skate culture iconography and the concrete canvas. Yet, finding home in the mountains guided him into an applied art practice—one embedded in sense of place. His bodies of work are informed through these experiences and expose his ties to graphic design, graffiti art and fine art techniques. Erickson's art is often translated through the mediums of spray paint, acrylic, canvas and panel.
Project Design
The City of Aspen and the Aspen Ideas Festival are partnering on a temporary pavement mural dedicated to increasing pedestrian safety and engaging the community in public art. Led by local artist Chris Erickson, the project enlists community volunteers to help paint the mural, located on the street in front of the Wheeler Opera House. This temporary asphalt art serves as a pilot project for the Aspen Public Art Plan and invites conversation around how art can be facilitated in Aspen's public spaces.
"This project combines the remarkable expressiveness of art with a very real public need: safety on our streets.” said Kitty Boone, executive director of Aspen Ideas Festival.
“Creating Aspen’s first ever public art plan is an exciting opportunity for the community to join in shaping something visionary and expressive of Aspen," said Sarah Roy, executive director of the Red Brick Center for the Arts. "We invite all to help create this street mural, learn about public art, and share their ideas for Aspen’s public art program."
Artist Vision
"The City of Aspen has a rich history of innovative thinkers who have influenced the formation of this valley and shaped the current state of Aspen's community. Herbert Bayer came to town in the 40s and his impact was felt almost immediately with the formation of the Aspen Institute. This mural makes reference to some of his paintings while infusing some of my own language and iconography. The principal theme and overarching concept of the mural is to celebrate the idea of community. In this design, the intense vibrant color is reflective of the unique personalities that reside in Aspen. Geometric lines represent the connective paths that bring the people together and demonstrate a harmonious group of people." — Chris Erickson
