Choose Aspen's next public artwork!
3 Local Artists. 1 Winner. You Decide.
Aspen Public Art and Aspen Center for Environmental Studies are proud to present Perch, a design/build contest to create a human-scale birdhouse that will be exhibited at ACES Hallam Lake during the summer of 2027. The winning design will become a creative destination open to all – a perch to hang out and listen to birdsong-inspired music.
Meet the makers, check out the designs, and vote for your favorite.
In-person community voting takes place Nov 30 to Dec 4, with an artist reception for Perch and the Red Brick Resident Artist Exhibition on December 3rd from 5 to 7pm.
Finalists for the Perch design/build contest gather at Hallam Lake with Aspen Public Art and ACES staff for a site visit on Oct. 26 as research for their proposals for Aspen’s next public artwork. The community will choose the winning design starting Nov. 30.
The Finalists
Following a public call to Roaring Fork Valley design-build teams, three Carbondale groups were selected by jury and provided one month and $1000 stipends to create conceptual drawings and models for the final round of the competition. Their proposals will be displayed at the Red Brick Center for the Arts for a people’s choice award that determines the contest winner. The teams are vying for $50,000 and the chance to build their vision, which will be constructed in May and on view through October, 2027.
The three finalist teams are:
“Colossal Owl” by Kyle McAlpin of Powder Day Design and Jason Caudill and Corey Summers of Pika Design Studio
“Down Home” by Hudson McNamee of Osprey Design Studio and Claire Wright of Cosecha Textiles
“Roost” by Will Young and Alicia Matesanz de las Heras
