Jazz Aspen Snowmass Jim Horowitz

Jazz Aspen Snowmass (JAS) founder and CEO, Jim Horowitz has been entertaining Aspen with a range of music from legendary performers to sounds from around the globe. Founded in 1991, JAS is entering its 30th year! JAS has grown from a simple 3-day event in Aspen to a complex set of multi-day festivals in Aspen and Snowmass; diverse year round music education programs; and the addition of the JAS Café featuring outstanding jazz musicians throughout the year in venues around Aspen.

Jim shared with Red Brick Center for the Arts his go-to playlist right now.

Ray Charles & Betty Carter: “Dedicated to You”:   My favorite duet album ever.   The sly interplay and chemistry between these two makes this one for the ages, especially their version of “Baby , It’s Cold Outside!”

Putumayo Collection:    “Music from Coffee Lands”:   Music from tropical countries of Africa, Central and South America which grow coffee.   It’s a fantastic variety of rhythms, very upbeat, a great mood elevator!   This is a great series of world music albums and one of my faves.

Shirley Horn:     “Here’s to Life”     The greatest jazz pianist/vocalist ever for singing lush, romantic ballads.  This album of standards has an orchestra backing Shirley with gorgeous arrangements by master Johnny Mandel.    It’s sheer beauty from first note to last.

Ella & Louis: “Together Again”:   Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong each recorded countless albums as leaders in their own right, but they managed to record a handful of celebrated albums together, and these recorded for Norman Granz’ famed Pablo Records, are standouts.

Frank Sinatra Sings Antonio Carlos Jobim:    At the peak of his powers , Sinatra’s big band and orchestra backed arrangements of the Brazilian master of Bossa Nova are among his greatest ever

Jim’s picks have been added to the Wheeler’s playlists, a great sound track to enjoy now.
