Hey Kiddo: Opening Reception

three women look thoughtfully toward a work of art at the Red Brick Center for the Arts

Join us for a festive evening of art, conversation, and community as we celebrate the opening of Hey Kiddo at the Red Brick Center for the Arts. Enjoy refreshments, meet the artists, and be among the first to experience this imaginative and thought-provoking exhibition.

Admission: Free and open to the public

Featuring five women artists, Hey Kiddo explores the shifting boundaries between memory, myth, and the natural world. From vibrant, futuristic paintings to clay works that capture the fragility of a single moment, each piece invites us to reflect on what was, what is, and what could be.

Lindsey Yeager’s radiant, techno-colored paintings evoke ancient myths and possible futures, while Jasmine McGlade’s nostalgic photographs ask us to slow down and see the beauty in the now. Ann Morgan uses AI to create dreamlike landscapes shaped by human longing. Molly Altman works in clay to hold onto what’s fleeting, and Rachel Bock captures frozen air bubbles in her photographs—tiny messages from a world beneath the surface.

Together, their work asks: What is the world we carry in our imaginations? And what might it become if we choose to see it differently?

We extend our sincere thanks to Aspen Public Radio for their support of this exhibition.

Pavement Art Installation and Community Celebration

June 25th, 10am - 4pm (weather permitting)
The City of Aspen and the Aspen Ideas Festival have partnered to create a temporary street mural dedicated to increasing pedestrian safety and engaging the community in public art. Bordering the iconic Dancing Fountain and the Wheeler Opera House, this pavement art will be installed in the street on the corner of S. Mill St. and Hyman Ave. on the opening weekend of Aspen Ideas Festival.

Community members and Aspen Ideas Festival attendees are invited to help paint the mural on June 25, 2023 (weather permitting). Sign up to paint here.

Roaring Fork Valley artist Chris Erickson will design the mural and advise on the installation, given his experience in this form of public art. Chris’s work is rooted in a sense of place, and he has designed a mural that celebrates the idea of a community comprised of multiple voices and the connectedness between.

This project is part of a new initiative by the City of Aspen’s Red Brick Center for the Arts to develop a Public Art Plan, which includes robust community engagement so that residents may shape the program. This Pavement Art project will serve as a pilot project and invite conversation around how art can be facilitated in Aspen’s public spaces.

This installation will take place June 24-26, 2023, and there will be traffic diversions while the mural is being prepared and painted. On June 25, community members and Aspen Ideas Festival attendees are invited to visit the site and help paint the mural, under the direction of artist Chris Erickson.  This main day of installation will be a community celebration, offering ways to engage beyond the painting of the mural and will prioritize the involvement of the public in the installation of the piece. There will also be a discussion open to the public on the importance of public arts in the community as part of the Aspen Ideas Festival (June 24 - 30, 2023), details to be announced.

This project was inspired by Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Asphalt Arts Initiative, whose studies have shown an improvement in pedestrian safety from public art projects. A low-toxicity exterior paint will be used for this mural, and a non-slip aggregate will be applied to enhance pedestrian safety. The installation will include appropriate material disposal.

If you would like to paint the mural or receive more information about the project in general, sign up here.

Guitars for Challenge America

  • Red Brick Center for the Arts & Art Gallery (map)

Join us for an opening reception and community celebration for Challenge America and the artists invited to decorate a guitar for their music therapy program April 20th from 4- 7pm.

Red Brick Center for the Arts is honored to support the incredible work being done by Challenge America. This Basalt-based, national organization uses the healing power of music to help veterans and their families cope with traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress. Challenge America offers expert-led music therapy retreats to Veterans across the country and provides each participant an acoustic guitar. Challenge America enlisted volunteer artists in the Roaring Fork Valley to decorate guitars that are donated to Veteran participants.

Red Brick Arts is honored to exhibit 38 locally decorated guitars on the evening of April 20th and along with Challenge America toast the artists. A selection of the guitars will remain on exhibit through May 13th.

Challenge America’s Director Dallas Blaney shared, “the artwork is truly incredible! And the best part is that the Veterans really bond with their guitars. Many hang the guitars on their wall, where they see it on a regular basis and are therefore reminded to pick it up and play. The program also creates an enduring bond between our local community and Veterans everywhere. The whole thing reinforces the fact that our extraordinary Roaring Fork Valley is filled with exceptional people.”

Koko Bayer

Koko Bayer

Koko Bayer is a Denver-based artist whose work focuses on outdoor installations of printed images. Since 2015 she has installed thousands of temporary outdoor works for her temporary structures project, a collaboration with grandfather Herbert Bayer’s work. Ranging from foot-long prints to large murals, her goal is to “adorn, engage and educate.”

In May of 2020, she began Project Spread Hope a series of installations created in response to the COVID-19 crisis as a reminder of the power of hope. As the COVID crisis unfolded she wanted to create an image that would help people feel better. “I started thinking about what has that effect on me? Topping the list is the color yellow. I love how it amplifies light and mood. It shows up all the time in my work, usually paired with magenta and called pink lemonade. I love how visible and visually uplifting it is and the way it resonates with viewers. The heart, symbolizing the self or spirit, also shows up often in my work. In this print, it represents love, optimism, and empathy. As does the word hope. I chose my grandfather Herbert Bayer's landmark font universal for its clarity.”

Born in France, Bayer moved to Colorado at age six. She studied design, printmaking and filmmaking at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, and the New School in New York. Her work has been featured in several mural festivals including BabeWalls 2020, Chrush Walls 2016-2020, StreetWise Boulder 2019/2020, Rocky Mountain Walls, Colorcon, and B-Line Chicago. Solo exhibitions include her two 2020 shows Pink Lemonade Hope in the Freyer – Newman Center at the Denver Botanic Gardens and Souvenirs at Dateline gallery.

She is a member of BagBaySha with artists Chris Bagley and Thomas Scharfenberg. Together they attempt to educate and solve major world issues with art installations. In addition to their 2020 installation Salt and Pepper Ghost for No Place to Go they have done installations at MegaFauna, Alto, and Leon galleries and was the first artist to install work at the Meow Wolf Denver site.

She is currently directing head+heart+hand a documentary exploring Herbert Bayer’s art. The film uses Bayer’s theories on visual communication to explore his diverse and fascinating work.
