Wendi Schneider: Reverent Alchemy

Opening Reception: Thursday, June 5th • 5–7 pm

Join us for an evening of art, mingling, and festive fare. Artist will be in attendance.

Red Brick Center for the Arts is delighted to showcase a collection of artworks by Wendi Schneider, known for her photographs of nature and wildlife printed on vellum or kozo with hand-applied layers of gold leaf or verso. Wendi's work does more than depict nature; it evokes the emotional and sometimes transcendent experiences of life. As Wendi states, "In those magical moments when my eyes and essence are engaged, I photograph what I feel, as much as see. The images are layered digitally with color and texture to blur the lines between the real and imagined." Wendi’s works are a testament to the fragility of life and the cycles of existence, capturing fleeting moments with a touch of wonder and reverence.

Hey Kiddo

“Sometimes I want an older version of myself to hold me and shake the unrelenting fear out of me, someone who can definitively tell me that everything will be fine; someone to tell me that it turned out to be worth it,” writes artist Lindsey Yeager in her artist statement.

In The Once and Future World, J.B. MacKinnon revisits an Earth that feels mythical in its abundance and vitality. He then describes shifting baselines, showing how the progressively reduced states of nature become the new ‘real’ or ‘normal’. Though this new normal can seem heavy and depressing, it is in the journey of imagination that MacKinnon shows us how to choose to live in a wilder world.

In this exhibition, five women artists invite us into their imaginations. Nostalgia, in Jasmine McGlade’s photographs, charms the viewer, urging them to slow down and gaze with tenderness at the present moment. Ann Morgan employs AI to conjure fictional landscapes informed by others' idealized worlds. Lindsey's vibrant paintings, drenched in techno colors, appear as relics from ancient civilizations or foreshadowing of future societies, entrancing and wise like age-old myths. Molly Altman molds fleeting moments into works of clay, aiming to preserve and perhaps delay the delicate balance of life. Finally, Rachel Bock captures frozen air bubbles in her photographs, which speak in Morse code, unveiling the hidden secrets of an active underwater world.

Nestled in the John Denver Sanctuary in Aspen, the words of Mary Oliver engraved on a stone offer a response to Lindsey's call.

Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

We extend our sincere thanks to Aspen Public Radio for their support of this exhibition.

Nicholas Ward: Dreams from the Margins

Nicholas Ward: Dreams from the Margins

"Above the Wind" surrealist painting showing three figures draped in fabric in reds, golds, and blues.
"Another Dream Put to Bed" surrealist painting showing a figure in a red robe drearily sitting in a chair.

Red Brick Center for the Arts is thrilled to present a collection of paintings by Nicholas Ward, a rising star who is garnering increasing attention and accolades.

Ward’s work explores the mythologized image of the American West—a vision shaped less by historical fact and more by cinematic fantasy, collective memory, and personal dreaming. Reanimating fragments of subconscious narrative into surreal compositions of scale and form, Ward evokes a world that feels both uncanny and familiar, inviting viewers to question what is remembered, imagined, or invented. His paintings probe the porous boundary between truth and fiction, particularly in the context of 18th and 19th century frontier narratives, when storytelling, emotion, and the fragility of memory blurred the line between history and myth.

In this body of work, personal dreams fold into the larger mythic landscape of the West. By filtering these stories through the lens of his own dream life, he questions who gets to author history—and how easily it bends under the weight of imagination. The result is a series of paintings and sketches that blur not only the line between truth and fiction, but between private reverie and collective memory.

Eric Elliott served as a facilitator for the Aspen Cultural Vibrancy Fellowship convenings, bringing his expertise to the program. We are delighted to showcase a collection of his work in conjunction with the Cultural Vibrancy Exhibition.

Eric explores visual perception and representation through the genre of still life paintings. Using repetition, Eric paints the same objects in various styles including impressionism, digital pixelation, and abstraction. One of the key features of his work is his attention to the subtleties of light and shadow. According to Eric, he views the objects in his compositions as an interconnected network of abstract shapes, where subtle differences offer diverse interpretations, much like different translations of a poem.

Listen or your tongue will make you deaf

A traditional proverb as translated from The Cherokee Nation

Proverbs reveal mysteries about ourselves. This proverb, as title, captures this country’s moment in history. It’s obvious to me that we have lost the grounding in our own human nature and in physical nature itself. This is the second in a series investigating these two relationships through a connection between our senses and a natural form.

Listening is the focus here. We each experience the world through a lens of biased personal perception. Through this artwork, I hope that a beautiful “listening rock” may provide an entry through which we can investigate these perceptions. Are we listening to each other? …to ourselves?…to what nature is telling us? …or is nature listening to us?

My sculptural mural uses the controversial 2020 US census as the departure point.  Each form is colored to identify the racial data collected. Creating 206 parts over 2 years, I proportioned the census data to visually show who we are as a nation:  57.8% White, 18.9% Hispanics, 12.4% Blacks, 6.3% Asians and 2% Native and Islander Nations.  5% are mixed race people. I have taken license to exaggerate some colors to capture an essence of race or personal orientation - and omitted others to reflect those who were left out of the census altogether. Each of the mural parts are unique and one-of-a-kind but made from the same source.

To make these ceramic and resin parts unique, each was generated from a form I carved in stone and molded. That first mold was then cast several times, each resulting cast was altered and then molded again.  Liquid clay slip was used to pour into 5 part rigid plaster molds, as well as press molded using small slabs of moist clay forming each part.  Incorporating different types of clay, each was dried over several weeks, glazed and fired in an oxidation kiln. Transparent 2-part polyester resin was mixed, tinted, poured and cured in flexible platinum silicone molds over a 24-hour period forming the balance of parts. This work was made to premiere during the 2024 series of 10th anniversary exhibitions of Michael Warren Contemporary, Denver.

July 29 - September 2
on the lawn at the Red Brick Center for the Arts

With Field Signs, a reimagination of used tents, installation artist Lara Whitley continues to transform waste into contemplative space. Crowd-sourcing nylon tents from the community, she harvested the technical outdoor fabric to hand sew a series of flags that are animated by wind and sun. Her flag landscapes draw on the colors of the outdoor industry, patterns found in nature, and memories of camping. Like the circular economy of her practice, Field Signs, which was originally commissioned for the 2024 5Point Film Festival, is constantly growing in size and regenerating in new locations. Her roving installation creates narratives of transformation, while carrying the original stories of adventure infused in the recycled tents.

Lara Whitley

Installation artist Lara Whitley finds joy in the materials given. She reclaims objects that society no longer wants — discarded, decommissioned or destined for the landfill — and reimagines them in new narratives. Whitley has rescued old bar bottles, dinner plates, boots, window panes and tents; she has reshaped them into contemplative spaces — a meditation temple, a forest shrine, a glass cabin in the woods — and countless abstract forms. She is interested in the renewal and healing that are available to all when we put broken things back together in new ways.

Named “a sculptor to watch” by Aspen Sojourner magazine, Lara Whitley earned a Bachelor of Arts at UC Berkeley and has studied at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and Colorado Mountain College. She is the recipient of numerous honors, including 2023 City of Aspen Cultural Vibrancy Fellowship, 2021 Aspen Art Museum Artistic Fellowship, and the 2019 People’s Choice Award at Art of the State, Colorado’s triennial juried show. Her residencies include Aspen Community School, Red Brick Center for the Arts and the Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts. Whitley’s work has been featured in solo shows at The Launchpad in Carbondale and The Art Base in Basalt, and collaboratively at Mai Wyn Gallery in Denver. A native of California, Lara moved to the Roaring Fork Valley in 1998, where she lives with her family.

Join us for the Gallery Opening Reception, June 20th, 5-7pm.
All are welcomed for an evening of art, mingling, and open artist’s studios.

In a world where rapid changes have left us with a future that evokes various emotions - from fear to excitement, from uncertainty to boundless possibilities - we find ourselves at a unique juncture. The impact of humans on the environment is immense and consequential, artificial intelligence is now a part of our daily reality, and innovation and creativity continue to offer endless opportunities. Artists, true to their nature, never remain passive; they continuously seek to grasp the essence of lived experiences, traverse physical and internal landscapes, unite disparate elements, draw from the past, reside in the present, question conventions, pioneer innovation, create, and envision a brighter future.

2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the Red Brick becoming a community art center. While we celebrate our past, this exhibition delves into the theme of the future and asks what lies ahead.

The Red Brick Center for the Arts is pleased to present an exhibition of works by two artists who have participated in the Sister Cities’ Arts and Culture Exchange Program. Local artist Deborah Jones visited Argentina in the fall of 2022, and we are pleased to welcome Bariloche artist Soledad Escudero who will visit the Roaring Fork Valley during the fall of 2023.

Aspen Sister Cities is a nonprofit organization that supports the Sister Cities international mission of “promoting peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation- one individual, one community at a time.” The Arts and Culture Exchange Program with Bariloche, Argentina started in 2014, fostering learning, inspiration and long-lasting friendships. The purpose is to share and appreciate the work of our local artists as an expression of our cultures, to exchange ideas and expand artistic opportunities.

The Sister Cities of Aspen and Bariloche share stunning landscapes that often greatly influence artists and become a subject for their work. This is so with artists Soledad and Deborah; however, the form of expression takes its own unique shape in each artist’s creation. Soledad performs in search of spiritual and physical connection with nature through scents, textures, and sound becoming one. Deborah’s mixed media artworks explore her relationship with nature, memory, and wonder.

From high energy brushstrokes, meditative paper folding, spending time with another human in an intimate portrait shoot, to layering, scraping, and layering again, these artists share their unique expression with us.

Sense of Time
Many of us often think of time as linear, fixed, and for some of us, something we don’t seem to have enough of in a day. However, physicists have a different take and debate whether it is real, an illusion, or even a dimension. In this exhibition, time is considered in various ways. Nostalgia in Jennifer’s paintings is explored as an ideal that can offer joy and perhaps a reminder to appreciate the fleeting moments of life. In the quiet, sparse rooms of Monica’s interiors, time holds the potential for what is about to happen or just did happen in the scene. In Hunter’s paintings, images from magazines, home finishing samples, and personal memories are cut from their original narrative and rearranged, collaging different events into a new story. Lastly, Christie takes us out of the immediate and draws us towards a spiritual realm where time is expansive, and eternal. These artists offer us different perceptions of time, which might be what is needed to make us accept its passing.

Disturbance

The balance of nature has been disturbed.

In Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, snow supports ecosystems, and at the core of it, life. The region doesn’t get much precipitation in the summer, so it highly depends on the snowmelt to feed the rivers, keep soils moist, and protect against wildfires. Colorado’s snowpack has declined in recent decades due to climate change, and with less snow to act as a frozen reservoir throughout the year, fighting the forest fires will be more difficult. The three largest wildfires in the state’s history burned in 2020, setting aflame nearly 700,000 acres. In the summer of 2021, the American West was considered to be experiencing the worst drought in modern history.

This project raises questions about the future of snow and its impact on drought and wildfires. By dividing it in three sections - Biophilia, Disturbance, and Water In The West - I explore human innate connection to the environment, and merge scenes of beauty and destruction as if they were part of one continuous landscape, showing how everything in nature is connected. The triptychs depict imaginary landscapes created by our unsustainable relationship with the natural world. Additionally, I capture abstract photographs of familiar landscapes that are vulnerable to environmental changes. My goal is bring the issues closer to the viewer by creating a relationship between the concepts of weather and climate, while shooting exposures ranging from 8000th of a second to minutes at a time. A frozen moment of weather; a movement of climate. By exploring all phases that water goes through, I tell the story of the most basic element which is of critical importance to life. Because in the West, snow is water.

Tamara Susa is a documentary photographer that focuses on environmental issues and the impacts human choices have on the natural world. She grew up in former Yugoslavia in between wars, and the scars left on the land from those wars are still felt today. Now based in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, she’s bearing witness to a different kind of destruction that is at the center of the work she creates. Through her photography, she invites the viewer to engage with questions about the future of the environment, learn how to better interact with the landscape, and live within the limits of nature.

Jeff Stevens

Jeff is a Colorado based international fine artist, art director and designer. At the age of 19 he began to cut his teeth in Los Angeles doing street art and playing in rock bands. After earning a BFA in art and design from Woodbury University in 2007 he entered into a career in entertainment advertising. Some of his print work has been the force behind major entertainment marketing campaigns including Star Wars, The Hunger Games and The Marvel Cinematic Universe. His art work has been exhibited in galleries in Tokyo, Los Angeles, Denver and locally in Aspen, Basalt and Carbondale.

With origins in design and advertising and a spirit for free and abstract collage, Jeff’s art work is a combination of both foundations. By deconstructing found imagery, original photography and painted elements the work seeks to redefine the language of art direction into new stories and content.

True West
curated by Annie Decamp and Michael Dowling

True West is a continuing look at the west, it’s location and culture through the eyes of the contemporary artist. Now in its third year the core theme continues, asking each invited artist to consider their perception of the west as a place or an idea, or an experience such as a westward migration or historical connection. Many of the artists were invited because of their direct relationship with the west. Other artists were invited because their work was made without the West directly in mind, but the symbols and ideas put forth encounter the west in some way.

The intent of this show is to give clear indication that the art is the star here, not the curator and really not even the artist. The only parameter we ask of the artists and galleries is to consider our place in the west and its history even if very abstractly in creating or selecting work for the show.

The annual show was conceived by Michael Dowling in 2018, constructed around the well-received Coors Art Pavilion, and the National Western Stock Show art events. Dowling’s impulse was to highlight more Colorado voices not appropriate or considered for the Denver-based Stock Show event.

curators
After meeting in 2018, Michael Dowling and Annie Decamp began painting together regularly and collaborating on curatorial events. They currently share side-by-side studios in Denver, Colorado. In 2021, the pair came together for the “That’s What He Said, She Said” show at the Red Brick Center for the Arts Gallery in Aspen, Colorado to showcase work that explored their dialog around art both literally and figuratively.

True West Contemporary 2022 will show as two events. All artists are asked to participate in Denver event and we will have a more limited representation in the Aspen event. The first event will run mid-January to the end of February, and the second event will take place at the Red Brick Gallery in Aspen in July, 2022 – a busy season for the art scene in the Roaring Fork Valley. Based on the success of Dowling and Decamp’s 2021 show at the Red Brick, they were asked to put forth a platform for a show in 2022 that would bring Denver-based artists together with artists from the Roaring Fork Valley. Consequently, the True West Contemporary show was selected as a key exhibit for the gallery’s 2022 calendar.

Round and Around

Opening Reception, Thursday, June 2, 5-7pm

Round and Around: Alissa Davies, Johanna Mueller, Zakriya Rabani, Jill Scher, Richard Sundeen

Scientists have long known that humans are drawn to patterns. We recognize them as a means of survival and to derive meaning from our surroundings. The basic building blocks of our humanity – our DNA – is a repeating structure that infuses our biology. In this exhibition, patterns are explored by artists in ways that represent our personal, natural, biological, and cultural curiosities. While each artist explores their individual relationship to pattern, all the artists share an intuitive approach and a personal connection they say resonates on a deep level. As Alissa Davies states, “we carry these shapes and patterns around inside of us which we are continually drawn to revisit”. As in nature, forms are ever shifting and state boldly that change is a constant. Disrupting patterns and adopting new definitions can be as useful as creating order. This exhibition presents order and change in relation and both as constants.

Leah Potts

After a debilitating skiing accident that left me paralyzed I find adventure in my paintings and the creative process. In a world where my body lets me down I can escape the madness go into the wilderness and connect with nature. Art saves lives, painting wildlife fills my soul helping me move through a disability creating positive solutions. The pure elegance of nature’s palette, textures and wildlife has become a constant source of inspiration for my watercolor paintings. Learning to paint with my non-dominant hand challenges me but also frees my brush strokes giving me a blend of realism and impressionistic style enabling me to capture the spirit of the animal. My art begins with a simple idea and grows from there. In my paintings I hope you can see but more importantly feel the essence of the animal through their eyes. With each stroke of the brush the animals comes alive and I am set free. The spirit of the animal fills my heart and inspires me through the tuff times, pushing me through the struggle. When painting I’m not alone, I have a purpose, I’m needed. I’m new to the art world as I’ve only been painting for the last 5 years; grateful for the support of this community, I’m eager to see where my artistic journey takes me, as I explore new mediums, different techniques and new subjects. I ponder, I hope and I pray, not afraid to put myself on display; me, my art, wild but free.

Join us for an opening reception and community celebration for Challenge America and the artists invited to decorate a guitar for their music therapy program April 20th from 4- 7pm.

Red Brick Center for the Arts is honored to support the incredible work being done by Challenge America. This Basalt-based, national organization uses the healing power of music to help veterans and their families cope with traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress. Challenge America offers expert-led music therapy retreats to Veterans across the country and provides each participant an acoustic guitar. Challenge America enlisted volunteer artists in the Roaring Fork Valley to decorate guitars that are donated to Veteran participants.

Red Brick Arts is honored to exhibit 38 locally decorated guitars on the evening of April 20th and along with Challenge America toast the artists. A selection of the guitars will remain on exhibit through May 13th.

Challenge America’s Director Dallas Blaney shared, “the artwork is truly incredible! And the best part is that the Veterans really bond with their guitars. Many hang the guitars on their wall, where they see it on a regular basis and are therefore reminded to pick it up and play. The program also creates an enduring bond between our local community and Veterans everywhere. The whole thing reinforces the fact that our extraordinary Roaring Fork Valley is filled with exceptional people.”

Jean Smith and Lydia Riegle: A Nod to Modernity

Jean Smith and Lydia Riegle: A Nod to Modernity

Opening Reception, Thursday, February 17th, 5-7pm
artists will be in attendance
masks are required while inside the gallery

The concept of Modernity looks to the past, but our exhibition goal is to take that time period and thinking and give it a shake to arrive at a present-day interpretation. Mid-Century Modern design is often geometric, intriguingly simple, with smooth flowing contours that recognize a quirky, playful quality. All of these qualities appeal. Because lives are now often complex, clean, and simple are appreciated today and almost everyone loves quirky, different, or fun.

These desired qualities can be used to describe Jean Smith's ceramic sculptures for the wall and Lydia Riegle's monotype prints and paintings. Visual creative language is often more than line, size, form, texture or space. We believe that art helps to bring memories to the surface starting a dialogue which then acts as catalyst to stretching thinking and boundaries adding to the richness of the human experience.

With that said, we look forward to sharing our present-day interpretation of this fun, iconic, and timeless way of thinking.

Meghan Wilbar: The Road Series

Opening Reception, Thursday, November 11, 5-7pm
artist will be in attendance

The Red Brick is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Meghan Wilbar. Based out of Pueblo, Colorado, Wilbar is a multi-medium artist who received her education from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois; and the New York Studio School in New York, New York. She has participated in many solo exhibitions and received various art awards.

The Road Series
As the clouds shift and change the landscape, I’ve been watching and drawing. I’m drawing the intimate story that exists by looking into the vastness of the open road and selecting the story through torn paper and drawn line. During the days of staying close to home, I’ve been drawing in my car with a pencil and an assortment of papers. It’s a process of careful looking and deciding what story gets told through the lens of shifting impermanence. During the pandemic, the uncertainty and isolation led to a new series of work depicting the roads that lead into an unknown future. A future that could get even more uncertain as the days passed. Concentrating on a 5 mile stretch of Highway 96, I’ve returned throughout the year to walk, draw and absorb the change of form and color from the side of the road. I take the culmination of moments spent in the landscape and recreate the dance of abstraction with drips, drabs and layers of paint. Color, form and imagery create space that is both solid and ephemeral. Just as the clouds form and dissipate, my work reflects both the strength and fragility of our fleeting moments of time and the roads that lead to a promising future.
